Bumgarner Hits, Pitches Giants to Win over Rockies, 6-5

11 Apr 14

This was Madison Bumgarner’s game. In the third inning, after Brandon Crawford had tripled, he lifted a high fly ball to deep left that reappeared at the warning track. Crawford sauntered home. Bumgarner’s first RBI of the game. In Bumgarner’s next appearance, in the fourth, he came up with the bases loaded. He lit into Jorge De La Rosa’s first pitch and sent it deep into the left-field bleachers as pandemonium broke out in the ballpark.

“I’m always trying to swing hard in case I run into something,” the modest pitcher said. “Fortunately for me and us, I happened to run into a couple today.”

On the mound, MadBum pitched six full innings, allowed 9 hits, 4 earned runs, struck out 7, and walked 2 as he improved his record to 2-0. Juan Gutierrez and Santiago Casilla notched holds in the seventh and eighth innings before Sergio Romo bagged his third save.

The game lasted an unmanageable three hours and sixteen minutes to the delight of a sold out AT&T ballpark.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers blanked the Diamondbacks in the desert, 6-0, and kept pace with the Giants. The archrivals share 7-4 records as they sit atop their division.
