Giants Continue Mastery of Braves, 4-2

12 May 14

Tim Lincecum twirled a gem nearly completing 8 innings, and Tyler Colvin drove in 3 runs with a homer and a triple to power the Giants past the Braves in San Francisco’s first home game since ending a successful road trip Sunday.

Lincecum struck out 11 and allowed 2 hits, one a homer, in his performance that contributes to bringing his ERA back down to earth. It rests at 4.78. Colvin came up from Fresno on Sunday when he went 0-1 with a walk in two appearances at home plate. Tonight, in his first appearance, he took Gavin Floyd to McCovey Cove with a second-inning splash hit that put the Giants into the lead, 1-0. Colvin delivered in the seventh when he pulled an 0-2 pitch into the right field corner for a two-run triple to put the Giants ahead permanently.

The Giants moved to 11 games above .500, Level 2 plus 1. The Dodgers kept pace, defeating the Marlins 6-5, and trailing the Giants by 4.5 games.

Giants Take Series from Dodgers, 7-4

11 May 14

The shadows had lengthened at Chavez Ravine this afternoon when the Giants clearly outshone the Dodgers in the fourth game of the series. The Giants won the game 7-4 and the series 3-1 to conclude a ten-game road trip they also won by winning 7 and losing but 3.

Through the sunshine and the shadows the Giants’ resilience impressed. The Dodgers drew their first blood by touching Tim Hudson (who has been golden for the Giants) for 2 earned runs in the sixth. The Giants came back with two of their own in the seventh and took the lead, 4-2, with a run in the eighth.

Sergio Romo blew his first save of the season in the ninth, surrendering a double to Dee Gordon, striking out Yasiel Puig, before suffering a laser-like homer to Hanley Ramirez that tied the score at 4. The Giants persevered with 3 in the tenth before Jean Machi saved the game, his first of the season.

At 24-14, the Giants have tied Milwaukee for the best record in baseball. And they have returned to 10 games above .500. On Monday they begin a seven-game homestand with 3 against the Braves and 4 against the Marlins.

Matt Cain returned from the disabled list to start and to pitch creditably into the sixth inning. The Giants were leading 2-0 when Cain walked Dee Gordon, Michael Morse failed to reach a catchable ball off the bat of Yasiel Puig, and Cain walked Hanley Ramirez. Jeremy Affeldt came in and held the damage to 2 runs. The Dodgers scored 2 more in the seventh and eighth, and won the game 6-2, the first of about six weeks of games the Giants will play without Brandon Belt. Zack Greinke won his sixth game against one loss.

The Giants are 6-3 on the road trip before its final game on Sunday that promises to be a dandy featuring Tim Hudson squaring off against Clayton Kershaw making his second start since returning from the disabled list. It will be their first meeting in 2014 and one of baseball’s premier matchups this season.
