The score pretty well discloses the game: the Giants’ starter pitched well (but not well enough), and the Giants’ offense didn’t produce enough.

Matt Cain held the Rockies to one earned run on 4 hits in seven innings. He struck out 8 and walked 3. At the game’s end his ERA had settled to 4.00.

The third inning saw Charlie Blackmon walk. Brandon Barnes singled him to second. A double steal took the runners to second and third. And then Troy Tulowitzki’s sacrifice fly allowed Blackmon to score easily from third base.

The Giants’ eighth inning will be talked about as the contract negotiations with Pablo Sandoval have stalled. With the bases loaded, Sandoval struck out swinging to score the third out. Some Giants’ fans already are saying that if he wants the big money, he’s going to have to find a way to be more consistent.

The Dodgers defeated the Diamondbacks, 8-5, improving their record to 8-4 as the Giants moved to 7-5 and fell to a game out of first place.

The national anthem, performed by Danielle Meulens, was proudly presented by the San Francisco Fire Credit Union, serving firefighters and those whom they support.
