The Giants had a streak of four wins, three at home, on the line tonight when they squared off against righty Tyson Ross of the San Diego Padres. Their chances looked good as Madison Bumgarner toed the pitching rubber.

But that analysis does not take into account catcher Rene Rivera who collected five runs (four earned) on a two-run double and a three-run homer. The unearned run came from an unusual error at short by Brandon Crawford on Tommy Medica’s sharply hit groundball. The Giants’ Brandon Hicks’ second homer in two days closed it to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth though the Giants did not score again.

It was a warm 64º degrees at game time as San Franciscans dread higher temperatures this week. The national anthem, performed by the Addison Elementary School of Palo Alto, was proudly presented on the radio by the San Francisco Fire Credit Union, serving firefighters and whose who support them.
