The Giants and the Padres tied in hits at 5, but the Padres scored two runs and beat the Giants 2-1. The Padres first run came in the first after Chris Denorfia tripled and Hector Sanchez let a ball get past him. Their second run came on a solo home run by Yasmani Grandal pinch-hitting for Tyson Ross who had completed eight full innings shutting out the Giants. Grandal’s shot came off of Jason Gutierrez.
The Giants’ single run came in the ninth, a solo home run by Brandon Belt, his sixth, off Huston Street.
Matt Cain started for the Giants and allowed but 4 hits in his seven full innings. He struck out 8 and walked two, lowering his ERA to 2.88. Tyson Ross gained the win by allowing 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 9.
The game was a very manageable 2 hours and 35 minutes.
The Giants kept pace with the Dodgers who lost at home to the Diamondbacks, 4-2, in twelve innings. The Dodgers and the Giants share a 10-7 record as they sit atop the West.
